About FIRE
The First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) is a course-based undergraduate research program that provides first-year UMD students with an inclusive faculty-mentored research experience that drives accelerated career readiness and opportunity.
Initiated in 2014, FIRE has grown to serve more than 600 new first-year students annually through the operation of 16 distinct FIRE Streams.
A FIRE Stream's ecosystem includes FIRE Students, Peer Research Mentors, a FIRE Faculty Leader - and - potentially you, a FIRE Faculty Collaborator.

About IRIE
The OUR Immersive Research Internship Experience (IRIE) is a summer undergraduate research internship program available to all UMD undergraduate students. The program is operated in collaboration with our well-established undergraduate research program, the First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE).

OUR provides student recruitment, communication, academics, professional development seminars, and summative presentation of results achieved. Additionally, OUR integrates the partner IRIE Research Mentor into a community of individuals to facilitate training, readiness, and support during the summer engagement.
Please see the Call for Proposals for more information.
About SPIRE
OUR's Student-Proposed Innovation & Research Experience (SPIRE) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to work closely with faculty mentors on summer research projects while actively engaging with the broader community of SPIRE researchers.
SPIRE is designed for students with experience with undergraduate research or students who have already secured an undergraduate research mentor.
Call for Proposals
Launch: Mid October, 2024
Student Submissions Close: February 24, 2025
All SPIRE proposals are initiated by undergraduate students - not campus partners. About MORE
OUR provides UMD campus partners and other research groups a platform for publicizing undergraduate research opportunities. Through this opportunities database and other initiatives, we facilitate equitable and inclusive recruitment into on-campus undergraduate research positions and related opportunities.
Managing Your Database Entry
If you have an entry in the database and would like to modify or remove it, please email our team with new information and we will process the change within one business day.
New System in Development
This information relates to our current system for helping campus partners recruit undergraduate students for research opportunities. Please stay tuned for a new system available to UMD campus partners in late 2024.
Our goal is to provide a system that enables partners to dynamically create, modify, and delete research opportunities without additional intervention from our office. We seek to better facilitate student-faculty connections by allowing UMD faculty to communicate with and evaluate candidates without needing emails, scheduled meetings, and other time-consuming processes.
