VIP Team Information

VIP Team
Quantum Machine Learning
VIP Faculty Mentors:

Dr. Shabnam Jabeen
Office of Undergraduate Research
Meeting Location, Day & Time:
Physical Sciences Complex (PSC) 3107, Wednesdays 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Description:
The QML VIP projects equip undergraduates with hands-on research experience in quantum machine learning, research presentation skills, and workforce-ready expertise in AI and quantum technologies. By embedding students in authentic research environments, this VIP team directly supports UMD’s leadership in quantum innovation and expands opportunities for students to join national and global collaborations. This experience positions students to engage early with cutting-edge technologies in a rapidly evolving field. Students will begin by building foundations in quantum phenomena (superposition, entanglement, gates) and classical ML concepts, then transition into designing and executing independent research projects using real quantum hardware and datasets.
Methods:
Students will use a combination of theoretical modeling, coding in Python and Qiskit, data analysis, and cloud-based quantum computing platforms (e.g., IonQ, IBM Quantum). They will engage in literature review, quantum circuit design, simulation, and team-based research projects integrating quantum algorithms with machine learning models. Emphasis is placed on experimental design, reproducibility, and presentation of research outcomes.
Majors:
This team is open to any student of any major.
This VIP is particularly relevant to students from the following majors:
- Physics
- Math
- Computer Science
